Every year, the people of the Protectorate leave a baby as an offering to the witch who lives in the forest。 They hope this sacrifice will keep her from terrorizing their town。 But the witch in the Forest, Xan, is kind。 She shares her home with a wise Swamp Monster and a Perfectly Tiny Dragon。 Xan rescues the children and delivers them to welcoming families on the other side of the forest, nourishing the babies with starlight on the journey。

One year, Xan accidentally feeds a baby moonlight instead of starlight, filling the ordinary child with extraordinary magic。 Xan decides she must raise this girl, whom she calls Luna, as her own。 As Luna’s thirteenth birthday approaches, her magic begins to emerge—with dangerous consequences。 Meanwhile, a young man from the Protectorate is determined to free his people by killing the witch。 Deadly birds with uncertain intentions flock nearby。 A volcano, quiet for centuries, rumbles just beneath the earth’s surface。 And the woman with the Tiger’s heart is on the prowl 。 。 。

Parts of this book I really loved, parts of this book I thought were a bit boring。 Ultimately I thought this was a perfect read-aloud book。

Amazing, beautiful book。 Wish I could’ve seen more of Luna’s magic, though!

I admit it's not my new fave at the moment, but I know I'll appreciate it a lot more on a re-read。 Regardless it's a beautiful, magical, heart-breaking and hopeful story。 I admit it's not my new fave at the moment, but I know I'll appreciate it a lot more on a re-read。 Regardless it's a beautiful, magical, heart-breaking and hopeful story。 。。。more

There wasn’t anything here that stayed with me after I closed the book。 There is a lot of allegory and metaphor, but I am not sure to what end。 I did not feel enlightened。 The language carried me through pleasantly enough, hence two stars rather than one。

This was a very sweet and beautiful book。 I am not sure if it moved a little slow, or felt a little to poetry-ish in places or if I am just in a reading burn-out slump a bit but I did set it aside for a while in the middle and then come back to it later。 It was really beautiful though with beautiful imagery and in the second half I found it to pick up quite a bit and some surprises in the plot that I really enjoyed。

A beautiful story, meant for children but wonderful at any age! What does love protect us from; what does love expose us to? Both questions are answered by a child, a grandmother, a small dragon, a large Bog monster and a madwoman。 Does not treat the reader as a listener but rather as a fellow adventurer。

4⭐️ this was such a magical read with the most amazing characters。 Loved every second and seeing the relationships between everyone。 It was a sad but satisfying ending and I did nearly shed a tear。 However, it was slightly darker than what I was expecting from a middle grade though!

My wife read and recommended this book。 Not one I would have picked off the shelf myself, but I’m glad she pushed it on me。 This is a fantastic book about love and goodness triumphing。 It’s a book for all ages and is probably best read in late grade school。 That is when the world is just beginning to widen and open and children need to learn to approach loss and struggle with grace and kindness。 Ultimately, that’s what this book is。 Sadness and madness transformed into magic, moonlight, and fami My wife read and recommended this book。 Not one I would have picked off the shelf myself, but I’m glad she pushed it on me。 This is a fantastic book about love and goodness triumphing。 It’s a book for all ages and is probably best read in late grade school。 That is when the world is just beginning to widen and open and children need to learn to approach loss and struggle with grace and kindness。 Ultimately, that’s what this book is。 Sadness and madness transformed into magic, moonlight, and family。 It left me with hope。 。。。more

Was the witch really wicked just like what the Elders of the Protectorate always told them? Did the witch really exist in the first place? As a middle-grade fantasy book lover, i just added this book into my lifetime favorite。 Why? Because it is a whole package for me。 I personally like a complex story with a little bit dark aspects being added into the story。 Moreover, this book is actually very heart-warming and it continuously tells you about love, family, motherhood, friendship and the whole good things in life that can makes us feel better。The other aspect of the story that i dearly love is the strong women characters。 Most women in the story were brave, strong and inspirational。 Xan with her big heart and love for others, she always helped and healed people in her whole life。 Luna was smart, rational and she would do anything to protect her loved ones。 Adara or the madwoman who was so persistent and her enormous love toward her daughter amazed me。 She reminded me of how beautiful motherhood is even though I haven't experienced it yet (hehe)。 And the last but not least our Ethyne, i really love the way she handled things。 She was calm, kind, loving, smart and brave。 She was also a type of leader who always knew what she needed to do。Probably the one thing that could be developed more (in my opinion) was the climax part。 I think it was too short and less thrilling。 I expected that the closure with the Sorrow Eater would be more difficult and dramatic。 But it wasn't。 So i kind of thought that this part was a little bit dull。 But, overall everything was fun and i really enjoyed reading it。 (Like i could barely put the book down!)It is a page turner kind of book and i am pretty sure, once you read it, you would hardly put it down because you would be absorbed into the story。P。S。 i am a fan of Fyrian! ❤️ 。。。more

3。25 The writing was exceptionally good and throughout this gave very much Disney vibes。 Unfortunately I didn't love it as much as I wanted to do。 The end was satisfying and everything I could ask for but I felt that it was rushed。 3。25 The writing was exceptionally good and throughout this gave very much Disney vibes。 Unfortunately I didn't love it as much as I wanted to do。 The end was satisfying and everything I could ask for but I felt that it was rushed。 。。。more
